Some Sample Prayers

“Pray Without Ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5: 17)

What is prayer?

According to Don Stewart, "The Bible has many things to say about the subject of prayer. Prayer is talking to God. It is our way of communicating our thoughts, needs, and desires to Him. It is an avenue that God has provided for the believer of making known the deepest feelings of the heart." (source: blueletterbible.org)

Below are a few samples and “starters”.

Amen

Used many times in the Old and New Testaments, the word “Amen” is often said at the end of a prayer to indicate “So be it” or “Truly” or “Surely”. It is an enthusiastic closing affirmation and agreement of what was prayed, spoken or sung. "And blessed be His glorious name forever; and may the whole earth be filled with His glory Amen, and Amen." (Psalm 72:19)

The Lord’s Prayer

(New English Version –Matthew 6: 9 to 13)

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.
Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as in heaven;
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are Yours.
Now and for ever. Amen.

A Personal Prayer

Dear Lord, You have made Your light shine in my heart, bringing me the knowledge of Your glory shining in the face of Christ. I come before You to praise Your goodness and to ask for Your grace. I pray that my life will be filled with truly good qualities which only Jesus Christ can produce. Help me to know and use the power of prayer, so that in faith I may seek Your blessings for all our needs – mine and those of my loved ones.

A Prayer of Thanks

Lord, I thank You for all Your mercies new to us every day. I praise You for leading me from the darkness of sin to eternal light through Your Word. I thank You especially for the gift of Your Son Jesus Christ who in humility walked the path of obedience all the way to death on a cross, so that we might receive the forgiveness of sins and the assurance of eternal life.

A Family Prayer

Lord, be the guardian of our homes and families, and let Your Word always shine there. Please bless our home with Your continued presence, guidance and help. Put Your Word into the hearts of children, and Your love into the lives of parents, so that we may enjoy the “bread of life” forever, looking to You for every need. Move all parents to sow Your Word in the hearts of their children, so that they may be raised in the ways of Christ, and live lives which are a blessing to church, community and country. Enable all families to live together in peace, love and true wisdom. In every day’s needs and crises, help families with Your presence. Be with them in sorrow or joy, sickness or health, disappointment or success, and make them safe and content in Your love.

A Prayer for Children

My Father in heaven,
My name is ______ and I am ___ years old.
I am thankful for the opportunity to talk with You at any time.
Help me to understand the Bible treasures that You teach me through the life of Your Son Jesus.
Guide me in the ways that I think, the words that I speak and the actions that I do, so that they will show others that I follow Your ways.
I pray that as I grow up, I will learn more about Jesus’ message of salvation – a message that started with His birth in Bethlehem, that continued with His wise messages to the people, that led to His sacrifice on the cross for me, and that formed groups of Your followers known as the Church.
I ask for Your blessing on these people:
For members of my family _______
For my friends _______
For those who make up my community _______
For Your church where we can worship You and learn how to tell others about You.
Lord, be with me and in my mind and heart at all times.

A Prayer for Those with Heavy Hearts

Lord, I commend to Your fatherly goodness all who have troubles, problems and doubts. With Your power and grace, comfort and help them according to their needs. I particularly think of those who are in pain, who are unwell or injured, those in the senior years, those who are sorrowing, those who are lonely, those who are enduring hardships, those experiencing physical or mental distress, those who are unemployed, those who are in danger, and all those who are separated from the knowledge of Your love, comfort and offer of friendship.

A Prayer for the Church

Lord, I pray for the whole Church and all who join in prayer. Bless Your people everywhere by Your Spirit’s renewing power, so that all who profess to be Christians may come to the knowledge of all truth, to a strong and living faith in Your Son, and to a true unity within the Church’s fellowship. I pray that Christians may live in faith and obedience to You, with Christian love for one another. Give us leaders who are true shepherds of Your flock. Strengthen congregations as they witness their faith and serve You as Christ their Lord and Head.

A Prayer for Christian Workers

Lord, we pray for those who have been called to proclaim Your Word, using their spiritual gifts to take Your Gospel to the world, and calling people to repentance and faith. Bless all who are in ministries of mercy and caring in our community in the name of Christ, including workers in schools, hospitals, aged care centres and services and agencies for the under-privileged. Strengthen Your servants everywhere that they may never grow tired of doing Your work.
We thank You for the world-wide mission of Your Church. Lord, especially bless and strengthen those who are proclaiming the Gospel in other nations, where in many areas they face opposition and danger in their witness, worship and work for Christ.

A Prayer for our Country

Lord, we pray for our country. Give us leaders in all walks of life who respect Your commandments, promote what is good and oppose what is evil, so that our citizens will live in harmony, peace and uprightness, with concern for the good of all. Help our leaders to know and follow Your will, so that they may maintain law and order with firmness and love. May Your truth hold sway in politics, business, industry, education and communications. We pray that we may live in peace and quietness, so that we may serve You without hindrance.

A Prayer for the Nations

Lord, keep the nations of the earth in peace. Remind people everywhere that You are the Lord of all history, and that You judge the leaders of the nations. Raise up leaders who acknowledge You and Your will. Show the nations the fullness of Your goodness and grace, so that they may turn to You – the only true God – and find salvation in Your Son Jesus Christ.

A Closing Prayer

Lord, keep us strong in the faith that we may look forward with joy for the promised return of our Lord, who in His coming will show Himself to the King of kings and the Lord of lords and the Saviour to all His people. To Him, with You and the Holy Spirit be honour and glory and power for ever and ever. Amen.
